Mission Statement

The mission of the Dearborn Heights Police Department is to protect life and property, preserve the peace, prevent crime, aggressively pursue violators of the law, and enhance the quality of life of the residents of Dearborn Heights.  To accomplish this mission, the members of this department will work in cooperation with the community and other law enforcement agencies in a manner that reflects the highest degree of integrity and professionalism and will strive to make the Dearborn Heights Police Department a premier 21st-century police department which is progressive, proactive and professional.

Police Department Overview

The Dearborn Heights Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency charged with the responsibility of providing 24-hour police services to the 55,616 citizens (as of the 2018 Census) who reside within the 12.07 square mile City of Dearborn Heights. The authorized strength of the department is 78 sworn police officers and 17 full-time civilian employees. There are also 14 part-time reserve officers who supplement the full-time ranks. The department is headquartered in the Dearborn Heights Justice Center, located at the south/east corner of Michigan Ave. & Beech Daly, which opened in 2003.

Dearborn Heights Police Department’s K9 “Twix” Receives New Body Armor

Dearborn Heights, MI - Dearborn Heights Police Department’s K9, Twix, has received a custom-fitted bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Twix’s vest was sponsored by Diane Olszewski of Livonia, MI and embroidered with the sentiment “in memory of Linda Olszewski-Gonnalez”.

“We are grateful to Ms. Olszewski and Vested Interest in K9s for their generosity” commented Dearborn Heights Police Chief Jerrod S. Hart. “Twix’s new vest is a welcome addition to our department’s safety gear, and is much appreciated by everyone at the Dearborn Heights Police Department.”

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S.-made, custom-fitted, and NIJ certified.  Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 4,682 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $960 will sponsor one vest.
