Handler and Twix

The K-9 Unit consists of one dog and his handler, Officer Mohamed Chami and Twix. Twix and Officer Chami are trained in drug detection, tracking, and building searches. Twix is trained and certified through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA). The K-9 team is assigned to Road Patrol duties allowing for a quick response to incidents where the use of the K-9 would be beneficial. The K-9 team also assist with all drug-related search warrant executions, perform drug sweeps of local schools, and make public relation appearances throughout the city.

Dearborn Heights Police Department’s K9 “Twix” Receives New Body Armor

Dearborn Heights, MI - Dearborn Heights Police Department’s K9, Twix, has received a custom-fitted bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Twix’s vest was sponsored by Diane Olszewski of Livonia, MI and embroidered with the sentiment “in memory of Linda Olszewski-Gonnalez”.

“We are grateful to Ms. Olszewski and Vested Interest in K9s for their generosity” commented Dearborn Heights Police Chief Jerrod S. Hart. “Twix’s new vest is a welcome addition to our department’s safety gear, and is much appreciated by everyone at the DK9 Twix Body Armorearborn Heights Police Department.”

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S.-made, custom-fitted, and NIJ certified.  Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 4,682 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies.  K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate.  There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $960 will sponsor one vest.
